Mary Klein

Mary Klein

As a child I was often compelled to salvage things around me and give them another chance at life. Whether it was a stick, a bottle cap or a piece of old wood, I would combine them with paint to create a more permanent existence of their inherent beauty. I enjoyed the process of connecting images, telling stories, and creating something from nothing. Perhaps this was my own life affirming response to having survived my third open-heart surgery by the age of 22. My initial imagery was a result of an interest in self-discovery. I looked at these works as an expression of my past experiences and possibly a window to my inner self. I didn't consider my pieces art. Over time, several collectors took an interest in my work that gave me confidence. My intention is to draw people in, to create art that engages, challenges or merely entertains. My hope is to elicit an emotional response, sometimes light hearted, sometimes philosophical, but always providing a momentary escape. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has called Mary Klein, who is from Nashville and now lives in Brooklyn a sophisticated self-taught artist. Klein considers her work a celebration of life and an expression of the beauty she finds in her surroundings. Mary Klein's artwork can be found in private and corporate collections across America. Over 150 pieces are on permanent display in the House of Blues.
